Hello! Welcome and stuff!

Somehow, you have stumbled onto the Mouse.Place page that gives details about this site its owner.

The wonderful logo illustrations that randomly display at the top of the site were commissioned from Bela and SPE, the fun Sunday newspaper comic style decorations were commissioned from Charles Brubaker.

This is my personal website where I spill my unfiltered thoughts. I got the idea to make it after a big digital detox. Specifically, I wanted to stop using sites like Facebook, Tiktok, X etc., remove or boycott all ads from what I do, ditch Amazon and their Alexa spyware, switch to Linux away from Windows and just generally cover my tracks in terms of advertiser spying and tracking. It was a fun little project getting it self-hosted and finally sitting down to learn how HTML and CSS works to make a WordPress theme. Just because I am not subject to any terms of service from a platform, doesn’t mean I’m going to be excessively crass or anything like that, it’s not how I roll. It’s more so the principal of ownership and taking back control from big tech, I guess. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t matter to anyone but at least for me this was a far more personally satisfying journey than just having a social media account.

If you’ve read up to this point, I can only assume you must be very bored or are trying to dig up dirt on me for nefarious purposes, because there are so many better things that you could be doing with your time right now! Consider yourself warned that beyond this point is unfiltered drivel.

I grew up in rural England, I’d like to think it was a fairly standard childhood but not having lived as another child, I can’t say with any certainty what a “standard” childhood even is. A nuclear family of a Mum and Dad and two kids, living in a house with a yard big enough to play ball in. A lot of people today aspire to live out in the countryside to escape the busy towns, but for me it was the opposite, one of those “grass is greener” situations. I hated not being able to go to the mall whenever I wanted, I hated that we only got four TV stations, I hated that we didn’t have Internet access. I especially hated living so far from school and needing to be up an hour earlier than everyone else to catch the school bus and getting home an hour later. Pro tip to any parents out there planning on starting a family outside of town, don’t do it if you can’t afford to take your kids into town for stuff on a regular basis, because they WILL absolutely turn out completely maladjusted for living in a modern world. It might sound nice letting them grow up wading in the creek and building a little tree fort in the forest but the moment they move out to be near their first job and are in a cramped apartment surrounded by noise from strangers, they are going to struggle. And in case it wasn’t obvious, yes that’s what happened to me. If my sheltered upbringing wasn’t the cause, it definitely exacerbated what neurodivergent issues I already had that were left completely ignored until my late 20’s when I was finally diagnosed with autism.

We were definitely a “gamer” family, although that meant something different back then. My Dad has a big scary box he called a “computer” that made loud beeping sounds that scared me as a toddler. He tried to get me interested in using it with games like Donald Duck’s Alphabet Chase or Lemmings, but when you mess up Donald throws a hissyfit on-screen, all while the internal speaker of the computer is screeching square waves, it was terrifying! No, for me the only way to play games was on my Gameboy. I shunned Donald in favour of Scrooge McDuck, with Ducktales being my favourite game on there for a long time. Mum wasn’t into video games so much, but she did like to frequent the bingo halls so that counts. Both her and my Grandma loved Tetris as well, much to my dismay when they’d be using my Gameboy to play it. I never had a home console until we got our second TV, and even then it was hooked up in my parents bedroom which wasn’t ideal. It was quite a leap going from a Gameboy to a Super Nintendo, which had Starwing (Starfox outside Europe) come with it, even my Dad I remember his jaw dropped seeing these 3D space ships zooming around at 10 frames per second. From there I went to Playstation because CD’s were cool and adult things to own and all the games with blood and violence were on there. I’m not sure what my thought process was, but I then passed up the PS2 in favour of the Gamecube and I think what sold me was Sonic Adventure 2, of all things. Never having owned a Sega console, I missed out on Sonic but I’d played it a lot at other peoples places and had been exposed to the comics and TV shows so finally owning a Sonic game would have definitely been a huge draw. Through all of this, I’d overcome my fear of computers and had computers of my own, just hand-me-down office PC’s that performed really badly but I loved the freedom it granted compared to consoles. By the time I got an Xbox 360 I was pretty much entirely sticking with my PC and old Gamecube, I only bought it for exclusives like FF13, Red Dead and GTA5, all of which eventually did come to PC anyway. And aside from having some Nintendo handhelds (the 3DS being the last one), I’ve been a PC gamer ever since!

Presumptuous of me to assume you’ve kept reading to this point, but you might be thinking to yourself that this all sounds relatively normal and entrenched in reality, but why are you a giant, bipedal, talking mouse? The short answer is because I love rodents and because I can be whatever I want on my website. The longer answer is because I’m somewhat of a fake furry. I am so fake of a furry, in fact, that I cannot write down here without fact-checking everything what a furry even is, but in short it’s a subculture that’s into anthropomorphism, which is when you give human features to animals like making them talk, or wear funky fresh blazers and walk upright. Lots of cartoons I was brought up on throughout the 80’s and 90’s featured characters that fit this bill, I even had crushes on some of them! But yeah, I’m a fake furry because I don’t participate in any of the online communities, I don’t go to cons, I don’t have a full-body fursuit… When it comes to furry meet-ups, I did try a couple of times but my social anxiety got the better of me on both occasions and despite nothing going wrong, I didn’t feel like I wanted to go back again. It didn’t help that I didn’t know what a furry was until well into adulthood so that just further adds to the imposter syndrome. “Fursona” is a play on the word Persona, it’s used to express yourself as your ideal anthropomorphic form and is how you want others to see you, but it can also incorporate parts of you that are true to reality.

So what’s the deal with the gender? Honestly, I’m unsure. I was brought up with the usual toys and activities and social expectations placed on my biological sex, then upon reaching adulthood I found out I missed out on a lot of stuff I would have loved doing as a kid simply because it would have been counter to the societal norms. Opening myself up to my femininity does give a certain feeling of I guess an inner peace, or completeness, but I’m not 100% convinced this means I have body dysphoria or anything like that. It’s not something I’ve dug that deep into, I’m just me, I appreciate being treated like an individual, likewise I believe that it’s fair, right and respectful to treat others according to their own individual needs. In short, I don’t feel like I fit either traditional gender role, but I don’t consider it a defining factor in who I am so I don’t act on it or pay it much thought… Despite writing a paragraph about it!

So lastly I’d like to ruin our newfound friendship with some rapidfire opinions from me! Politically, I am left-leaning, in case it wasn’t obvious at this point, although the majority of all mainstream political parties are to degree corrupt and not worth voting for. I am very anti-corporate, I feel like we’ve hit a sort of end-game, hyper-capitalism hellscape, where all power has been consolidated into a small handful of companies seeking eternal growth by any means necessary, which means more layoffs, lower pay, lower quality products, higher prices, subscriptions everywhere. I used to love tech, it was always exciting to see what neat gadgets kept coming out, things you just bought, used and tinkered with. Nowadays not so much, it’s mostly just iterative improvements on things we already have, but with more ads, spyware and personal data harvesting. The tipping point for me to just straight up reject big tech completely was the rise of AI, which in my opinion could be the worst thing to happen to mankind since the last global conflict. Even before getting into the harms it’s doing right now, just the fact that tech billionaires can steal everyone’s data, including copyrighted material to train their AI with and not only get away with it without penalty, but rake in billions of dollars in funding is enough on its own to convince me that it has zero potential for any ethical uses. But on top of this, it’s destroying communities with the massive datacenter rollouts, often in places that do not have the infrastructure to support them without detrimental impact on the surrounding environment. It’s ruining children by giving them tools to cheat their educations. it’s ruining the jobs market by taking work away from creatives and professionals, particularly at the entry level. It’s ruined the economy, causing the prices of consumer electronics to double, triple quadruple in price and tying up peoples pensions and savings in a business model that has no chance of working. It’s lead to a fountain of misinformation, scams, grifting, fake images and social media posts, to the point where bots now make up the majority of all Internet traffic and it’s hard to go anywhere on the Internet without seeing AI generated slop. Anyone pro-AI is either massively ignorant or financially benefiting from it, the same sort of manufactured hype cringe you’d see from crypto.

I’ll cap things off here because there are other things I’d like to write about in more detail someday as their own topics. Thanks for reading this garbage, though!
